The First Banner Ad Ever
Have you ever heard of banner ads? Not the one which we used to see on public highways or at roadsides but the ads which we always see on the internet like pop up ads arrive when we are surfing through any blog or a youtube video. For instance, a square or a rectangular box containing a picture and a text message like “Jumbo Sale. Upto 80% off.” with a linked text “Buy Now” that redirects you to the page containing the company's offerings. Now-a-days banner ads are so common. But around 25 years ago, an American multinational firm AT&T posted it for the first time in 1994. Let’s see how the first banner ad of AT&T looked like.
The first ever banner ad was of a well known American multinational firm AT&T which was posted on hotwired. On 27th October, 1994. It was the first paid ad to provide Click-through-rate reports of the customers. It was a rectangular banner or a box containing a text “Have you ever clicked your mouse HERE?” and an arrow pointing towards the text ”YOU WILL” at the right side of the rectangular box. It was like a text in that rectangular box is convincing you to click on the ad.
The above image represents what the banner ad of AT&T looked like at Hotwired’s page.
When the user clicked the banner ad they reached to the landing page of AT&T titled as “You did! Now let’s see what else you will do”. The text was convincing the visitors to click on some further links.

Above image is the landing page where the user reached after clicking on the ad. According to the above, There are three links which let visitors visit the further pages of AT&T. The first link was about an exhibition of the collection of the Louvre treasures in an art museum containing text “Have you ever toured an art museum without leaving your seat”. The second link was about the latest technologies and creations of AT&T and the text was “Have you ever wanted to learn more about the latest in technology from AT&T.” and the last one was a small feedback form with the text “Please help us improve this space.”
So, this is how the first ad ever on the internet looked like. Today, we go through lots of ads while surfing and we feel it's like an irritating obstacle. We don’t even want to click it unless and until it’s useful for us. But this banner ad was the first ad ever on the internet which has been clicked by 44 users.
